Our Mission

is Active Wilderness Stewardship.

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation (BMWF) provides access to and stewardship of Montana’s 1.6-million-acre Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Our volunteer projects keep trails open, restore native habitat, mitigate user impacts, and engage youth and adults in wilderness experiences that change lives and instill a lasting land ethic.

We work in close partnership with the US Forest Service to create educational and challenging conservation service projects within “the Bob.” Since our first summer in 1997, our volunteer crews have cleared and improved over 10,000 miles of trail. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Volunteer Adventures

Whether you’re an avid backpacker who wants to hit the trail with a new group, a life-long visitor to The Bob who wants to lend to its stewardship, or a first time camper who’s comforted by having a trip leader organize logistics, BMWF's volunteer vacations are a great way to get outside and give back to Wilderness. Families and children ages 12+ with adult supervision are welcome.

“If you want to hit the "reset" button, get away from emails, texts, work, and the news this is a perfect remedy. Get exercise, contribute to an amazing cause, sleep under the stars, and not shower for a week. You will appreciate the little things when you get back.”

– 2018 Volunteer

Planning a Trip?

Exploring new wild places by foot or by horse is an amazing way to reconnect with nature, see breathtaking sights, slow down and decompress. It’s also a challenge. Wilderness demands humility and the forgoing of convenience, and its essential to be prepared with the right gear and knowledge. Here are some important steps to take as you prepare to head into the backcountry.
