Project Description

This is a trip for underrepresented and underserved community members, held in partnership with the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, Latino Outdoors, and Outdoor Asian.

Participants on this trip will assist with two science projects. The ecological research involves the collection of environmental DNA samples in the Bob Marshall Wilderness to understand the distribution of threatened aquatic species. In addition, participants will support work to understand how community science opportunities shape individual wilderness experiences and support wilderness stewardship. All participants will be asked to participate in an interview/survey following the trip.

This trip will take place from Friday, June 14th to Tuesday, June 18th leaving from Kalispell, Montana. During the trip, volunteers may hike up to 10 miles a day with a pack weighing up to 20 lbs. We will be camping for the duration of the trip, including two nights in a remote wilderness setting. Meals will be provided, and funds are available to offset the cost of travel (including airfare to/from western Montana). Travel to/from the trailhead will be provided.

In addition to ecological research, participants will support work to understand how community science opportunities shape individual wilderness experiences and support wilderness stewardship. All participants will be asked to participate in an interview/survey following the trip.

No camping or scientific experience is necessary for this trip, although we do recommend that volunteers have some experience hiking. Camping and hiking gear are available to borrow, although you will need to supply your own hiking boots.
