Project Description
Join us for a 4-day backcountry stewardship adventure in one of Montana’s most stunning Wilderness areas. This popular route leading to the renowned Chinese Wall sees heavy foot and stock traffic, and the campsites along the South Fork of the Sun River are in need of some TLC. As a volunteer, you’ll camp out in the heart of this wild landscape, working alongside fellow volunteers to restore heavily used campsites and mitigate the impacts of overuse.
During the day, your crew will focus on essential tasks like restoring campsites – repairing fire rings, managing human waste disposal, and restoring vegetation – while also tackling the removal of invasive weeds to help protect native plants. These efforts are vital for preserving the beauty and sustainability of this treasured area for future generations of hikers, backpackers, and stock users.
After a rewarding day of hard work, you'll return to camp under the stars. Whether you're relaxing by the campfire or exploring the surrounding backcountry, this trip offers the perfect balance of meaningful work and outdoor adventure.
By volunteering, you’ll make a real difference in mitigating the impacts of overuse, helping to protect this stunning part of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. It’s a chance to connect with nature, contribute to an important cause, and create lasting memories with new friends.
Cancellation Policy
It is very important to know that you are expected to commit to the project once you sign up. All of our projects take a lot of time and effort to organize and we want to make sure that we have full trips so that we can complete the project as outlined by our Forest Service partners. Please do not sign up for a trip unless you are committed to doing it.
We do, of course, understand that things happen and circumstances change, so if you must cancel, please do so as soon as possible. Cancellations made less than 45 days before the trip and no-shows will forfeit their project registration deposit as a cancellation fee.
While uncommon, BMWF may find it necessary to cancel a project due to low volunteer sign-ups or safety reasons (i.e. wildfires), but will contact volunteers as soon as possible and typically no later than two weeks before the project start date. For this reason we strongly recommend volunteers purchase trip insurance when making airline reservations or other travel arrangements.
To see how many spots are available click the SIGN UP button below. The second page will tell you when there are fewer than 4 spots remaining on a trip.
We encourage you to join the waitlist if a trip is full – we often have openings for these spots throughout the summer!
