Project Description
This second-annual Women’s Affinity Group trip in memory of Becki Linhart is an empowering opportunity to connect with other women, embrace the wilderness, and discover your inner strength while learning new skills! No experience is needed – just a passion for hard work and a desire to grow. We welcome all women and girls (transgender and cisgender) as well as non-binary people who feel a connection to the women’s community.
From your alpine basecamp high up on Moose Creek, your crew will tackle the trails around Elk Lake and Vinegar Mountain, clearing the path and making it easier for future hikers to enjoy. With breathtaking views of the Great Bear Wilderness from your work site on Vinegar Mountain, you'll be surrounded by beauty and camaraderie. After a fulfilling day of hard work, unwind with delicious food, great conversation, and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve made a difference. Enjoy a day off mid-week to explore the area with your newly made friends, or just relax around camp. This trip is all about empowerment, growth, and sisterhood in nature!
Who was Becki?
Becki was singular, not someone you forget – her dark, sardonic sense of humor was juxtaposed against a very silly, made-up-song-singing, passionate woman. The throughline in Becki’s life was a passion for all that was wild. From growing up camping with her family in Pittsburgh, to earning a degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management at Penn State, to working in conservation, she carved her own path through life. She found joy in traveling both abroad and throughout the country in order to experience the world as much as she could. Along the way, Becki created an immense network of friends and colleagues that shared her values, goals and sense of humor.
In January 2023, when she was 32 years old, Becki was diagnosed Small Cell Carcinoma of the Ovary, Hypercalcemic Type (SCCOHT) – a rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer. Throughout her treatment, Becki continued to remain forward-thinking in planning her next trips and also found solace reminiscing about the various places she lived, worked, grew, and ultimately made better. While Becki passed away in June 2023, her legacy of giving back to our wilderness remains. We hope that anyone who learns about Becki honors her memory by living like she did – eschewing norms, living your truth, giving back to the environment, spending time with loved friends and family, and laughing along the way.
Cancellation Policy
It is very important to know that you are expected to commit to the project once you sign up. All of our projects take a lot of time and effort to organize and we want to make sure that we have full trips so that we can complete the project as outlined by our Forest Service partners. Please do not sign up for a trip unless you are committed to doing it.
We do, of course, understand that things happen and circumstances change, so if you must cancel, please do so as soon as possible. Cancellations made less than 45 days before the trip and no-shows will forfeit their project registration deposit as a cancellation fee.
While uncommon, BMWF may find it necessary to cancel a project due to low volunteer sign-ups or safety reasons (i.e. wildfires), but will contact volunteers as soon as possible and typically no later than two weeks before the project start date. For this reason we strongly recommend volunteers purchase trip insurance when making airline reservations or other travel arrangements.
To see how many spots are available click the SIGN UP button below. The second page will tell you when there are fewer than 4 spots remaining on a trip.
We encourage you to join the waitlist if a trip is full – we often have openings for these spots throughout the summer!
