Upcoming Exhibition at the Hockaday Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Artist Wilderness Connection Residency Program in Bob Marshall Wilderness
KALISPELL, MONTANA –Artist Wilderness Connection (AWC), a unique, collaborative artist-in-residence program in Montana managed collectively by Hockaday Museum of Art, Flathead National Forest, Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, and Swan Valley Connections, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the program and 57 past participating artists with a special exhibition, Artist Wilderness Connection Celebrates 20 Years, opening to the public June 28, 2024.
The Artist Wilderness Connection residency program begun in 2004, selects two artists, writers, photographers, or musicians to stay in remote forest cabins in the Bob Marshall and Great Bear Wilderness areas of Northwest Montana for one to two weeks during the months of July, August, or September, while creating art inspired by nature and their wilderness living experience. After completing their residency, artists work with the Hockaday Museum of Art and other Program Partners to share their backcountry experience with a free community outreach program or exhibition, and donate a representative artwork to the Artist Wilderness Connection program. The program is on hold in 2024 for the anniversary exhibition. Applications for 2025 will open October 15, 2024.
The exhibition at the Hockaday, Artist Wilderness Connection Celebrates 20 Years! will include over 40 artworks, writings, journal pages and music samples from past participating artists created during their residencies, as well as an audio tour for the public to hear in the artist’s own voice and words about the work.
There will be a preview reception at the Hockaday Museum of Art Thursday, June 27, from 4-7 pm for an opportunity to meet several local participating artists, attend a presentation by recent participants, as well as enjoy light refreshments sponsored by Glacier National Park Conservancy and Walmart-Kalispell, local craft beer donated by Bias Brewing , and live music by Donnie Rifkin. Admission is free.
