Our 2025 Spring Roundup is here! If you didn’t already get one in your mailbox, check out our e-edition on our website at bmwf.org/newsletters or contact us for a hard copy.
One page we’re particularly proud of is our 2024 By the Numbers. As our work has expanded, we’ve tried to capture its range here, with all of the ways our volunteers help us give back to the Bob.
Of course, missing from these numbers is maybe the most important piece of all — the power of spending quality time in this vast wilderness, for both our volunteers and the public trail users who benefit from their efforts. The intangible impact of this place can’t easily be measured, but it gets in your bones, and keeps us working to protect these landscapes for generations to come.
Come help us celebrate these accomplishments and show your support for public lands like the Bob at our Mountainfilm on Tour that kicks off this week in Bigfork! ππ½οΈ bmwf.org/mountainfilm

Mountainfilm on Tour kicks off in exactly ONE WEEK! We are so excited to bring this set of stunning films from around the world to our local communities on all sides of the Bob.
While these films don't take place in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, they celebrate the spirit of our work to connect people with wild places. The stories they tell illustrate what we all know to be true: how time spent in nature can heal, empower, and connect people from all walks of life.
From Indian Relays on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, to hog hunting in the Ozarks; from epic ski adventures in Norway, to one of the most remote and bear-strewn beaches in Alaska – these films take us on world-class adventures through unique characters, moving narratives, and incredible scenery.
We really love our playlist this year, and we hope you will too. Please join us in Bigfork, Whitefish, Choteau, Helena and Missoula throughout March!

Hey! It's National Invasive Species Awareness Week! In 2024, BMWF used our @nfwf America the Beautiful Challenge grant to introduce a new backcountry weeds crew to our internship opportunities: the Wilderness Invasives and Restoration Crew (WIRC).
This five-person crew became pros at treating and mapping weeds across the Complex all summer. We also led three volunteer trips with 21 volunteers who removed a whopping 500+ pounds of weeds from the Wilderness. All told, our staff, interns, and volunteers were able to treat 101 acres of invasive weeds last year.
Provided our grant unfreezes, we're planning to repeat these efforts through our volunteer adventures and WIRC this summer – stay tuned!
You can help reduce the spread of invasive weeds in the Bob by cleaning your hiking boots, watercraft, waders and other fishing equipment between trips, to make sure there aren't any unwelcome travelers on your gear.
Do you know which invasive weeds are in these photos? Drop your ID knowledge in the comments!

Friends, we've made the tough decision to delay the roll out of our 2025 Volunteer Adventures. We were originally planning to release our summer schedule with roughly 40 volunteer projects this Monday, but so much has changed over the past few weeks that we need to press pause for now.
With local Forest Service trail crews all but eliminated, we expect that our work locations may shift substantially to focus on Mainline trails and help maintain a basic level of access to the Bob. Furthermore, over half of our anticipated funding is currently frozen. As we get a clearer sense of our capacity and the needs on the ground, we will keep you informed of a new timeline for our project release dates.
We want to be clear: No level of volunteer stewardship could fully replace the knowledge, skill, efficiency, and talent that these federal employees brought to the Complex.
At the same time, we know there is a lot of energy out there right now from people who want to help, and BMWF is primed to turn that energy into action. Our goal remains the same as it has for close to 30 years: Support our USFS partners through active stewardship of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex.
We hope you'll join us along our upcoming Mountainfilm on Tour as a chance to gather with our wilderness community, support hands-on stewardship, and raise a glass to the wildest places like the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. ππ₯ bmwf.org/mountainfilm
Thank you for being a part of this strong community who LOVES the Bob!

We want to take a moment to acknowledge the US Forest Service employees who lost their jobs this past week. Many of them are people we've worked alongside for years who we've grown to call friends; some of whom even got their start with BMWF and were fulfilling their dream of working to conserve the place they love. They're hardworking, dedicated folks who are part of the fabric of our Bob community.
All five ranger districts that manage the Bob are facing significant cuts to their recreation and trail crews – the people on the ground who open trails, engage the public, respond to emergencies, manage campgrounds, patrol rivers, and help fight wildfires each summer.
We've been getting lots of questions about what this means for our work, to which we don't have many answers right now. We're exploring options for how we can run the most effective stewardship projects to best support our USFS partners. At this time, over half of our anticipated funding is frozen.
We're optimistic that we'll be able to bring volunteers into the Bob to open trails and preserve habitat this summer. We know our work is more important now than ever to help conserve this special place that belongs to us all.

Reminder to join us this Wednesday, February 19th for our first speaker in the 2025 Wilderness Speaker Series! We're excited to have one of our own dedicated volunteers – who also happens to be a talented local author and essayist – Antonia Malchik joining us as our guest presenter.
Antonia has written on a range of topics around community, conservation, and the loss of the commons. Her first book, A Walking Life, is about the past and future of walking’s role in our shared humanity. Antonia's talk will explore how wilderness areas and intact ecosystems like the Bob Marshall – and the public’s access to them – play a vital role in our individual physical and mental well-being, while also ensuring fundamental human liberties.
π The Wilderness Speaker Series takes place on the third Wednesdays in February, March and April from 7:00-8:15 in @fvcc_mt's large community room (AT-139).
Presented by BMWF, Wild Montana's Flathead-Kootenai Chapter, Northwest Montana Lookout Association, and the Natural Resources Conservation Management Program at Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC).

Volunteer FAQs, question #3: What kind of food will we eat on a BMWF trip? π―ππ
We pride ourselves on making great food for our volunteers, as a thank you for their hard work! Our Crew Leaders create menus that work for everyone on their crew based on the dietary information you give us on your registration. While we aren't professional chefs, we do love to eat and we know how important a good meal is after a long day of trailwork. We use fresh ingredients as much as possible and try to get creative with what we can pull off in the backcountry.
Breakfast will generally be continental style – oatmeal, bagels, cereal, yogurt and granola, etc. (and of course, plenty of coffee!). After breakfast you'll pack your lunch to hit the trail for the day – sandwiches or wraps, apples, carrots, granola bars, salty snacks and sweet treats.
After work, you'll enjoy light appetizers followed by a hearty dinner. Possible dinners include veggie curry with rice, chicken and bean burritos, or pesto pasta with Italian sausage and salad. Usually followed by a sweet treat for dessert π«
Side note – both of these goofballs pictured will be back leading crews in 2025, and we're so excited to have their lovely faces back in our neck of the woods π
*Our 2025 trip schedule will be published for preview on March 3rd. Until then, we're sharing answers to common questions about our volunteer adventures to help get you stoked about joining us in the Bob! Learn much more at bmwf.org/volunteer π
